Southern Medical
Guayama, Puerto Rico
This existing two-story concrete structure built in the 90’s by the Puerto Rico Telephone Company was acquired and converted into a private medical clinic serving the population of Guayama. The project called for the addition of a third level, elevator tower and new entrance. The scope provided the opportunity to remodel the facade, adhering to the basic features and window patterns in order to control the cost of construction. The proposed design adds an elevator tower that accommodates a new lobby space in every level, changing the massing of the building noticeably. The structure for the new level is all steel with metal panels for walls, while the elevator tower is completely built in concrete. The combination of corrugated metal, exposed concrete, painted cement plaster and glass is enough to completely refresh the appearance of the building, in a cost-conscious manner.
